Directshow is a multimedia framework for working with media files and streams e.g. audio or video. Using a series of filters we can manipulate the audio or video in a multitude of diverse ways.

For example, an overlay layer may be mixed into the video to produce a text overlay or bitmap overlay. The audio stream can be monitored and calculations applied to the input to produce an sound output level for a VU meter. Audio overlay can be added or removed from video, the list is endless. If your appplication uses video or audio, there is a strong chance you need to be programming using Directshow.
